Current status:
The breeding of sheep in the Mirandese Plateau dates back several centuries, as evidenced in the
Forais of Miranda (1686-1510). Sheep farming in the Mirandese Plateau is an economically viable
activity, which has greatly contributed to the maintenance of rural populations. Additionally, sheep
farming is closely linked to the preservation of the landscape and ecosystems of the Mirandese
Plateau.
Partner’s view:
The wool from these animals, another important ingredient in the production of traditional
clothing in the Terras de Miranda region, currently has no market value and, as such, is completely
wasted. Its primary use is in the initial cleaning and pre-preparation process to serve as raw
material.
Challenge:
Explore sustainable and profitable ways of pre-treating the by-product until it is ready for use as
a raw material in industrial processes.
